Manchester United had already gone out to Middlesbrough on penalties in the previous night; and Chelsea may have been worried on facing the same fate; thus they played their strongest possible team. However; they were to be given the fright of their lives; as Plymouth played out of their skins to almost force a penalty shoot-out in this 120 minute; madcap epic.
They rode their luck at times; as Chelsea hit the woodwork no less than three times in the first half; but their defense was tremendous and they made some last-ditch blocks like their lives depended on it. In the end; they could even have forced a penalty shoot-out; but substitute Ryan Hardie's nervous penalty was well saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga.
