The Great Wall

Let's face it: Big Threes have not been doing well in basketball recently. Yes Michael Jordan; Scottie Pippen & Dennis Rodman were perhaps the greatest Big Three ever; leading the Chicago Bulls to an unbelievable 72-10 regular season record and three straight championships; while LeBron James; Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh got it done for Miami Heat. Kevin Garnett; Paul Pierce & Ray Allen were also on fire when they teamed up for the Boston Celtics to win their memorable championship in 2008.

But lately: Big Threes have become something of a joke in the NBA. The Los Angeles Lakers thought they hit the big time by signing Russell Westbrook to partner superstars LeBron James & Anthony Davis; instantly making them championship favourites. After a tumultuous season of missed games & bad turnovers; they failed to even make the playoffs. Ditto the Brooklyn Nets; who signed James Harden to partner Kevin Durant & Kyrie Irving in surely an unplayable combination. After a season of drama and COVID unvaccination; the team stumbled into the playoffs where they were swept in the first round by the Boston Celtics.

And now we have the latest Big Three in town. John Wall; one of the stellar point guards of his generation; has somehow found his way to the Los Angeles Clippers; who are already boasting two superstars in Paul George & Kawhi Leonard. Oh we have seen how George has manfully carried the Clippers on his back the last few seasons; especially last when Kawhi was out the whole time. But try as he might; it was not quite enough. Now with Wall & Leonard back on the team; things are looking different. Wall has already made the right noises; proclaiming himself the 'third-best' behind Leonard & George; and how he doesn't have to be Superman every night like he was at the Washington Wizards. Let's see how it transpires this season...
