As seen in West Ham's social media; they may have thought this was an easy win coming; but even shortly into this contest; it would be quite clear it would be anything but. Everton played with an energy that is only sporadically seen at Goodison Park these days; and the players seemed to have downed sufficient amounts of Red Bull; they were combining well as a team too.
It is no secret to the eye that with new captain Conor Coady and James Tarkowski in the backline; Everton look much more solid in defence; and when you add to that the revelation that is Nathan Patterson; then you have got a very strong backline indeed. And when you have a reserve 'keeper with the name of Asmir Begovic; let's just say you need not panic as well.
West Ham did not help their cause with a terrible display. They seemed lethargic and running on empty; short of creativity and the know-how to really trouble the Everton backline. Too much of their players are not at the standards of past seasons - I'm talking about Jarrod Bowen - who was near-unplayable last season - and the midfield axis of Declan Rice & Tomas Soucek - the strength of West Ham's team - look a pale shadow of their former selves.
Add to that their new players have yet to bed in - Lucas Paqueta looked too slow for the Premiership; and was surely the wrong choice to start over Said Benrahma; and Italian international Gianluca Scamacca doesn't look the real deal at the moment - and the Hammers are in a right rut as of now; hovering within the relegation zone.
