Chelsea have transformed the meaning of 'overhaul'. They had sold no less than 12 players over the past season: both goalkeepers Edouard Mendy & Kepa Arrizabalaga; captain Cesar Azpilicueta; star defender Kalidou Koulibaly; midfielders N'Golo Kante; Jorginho; Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount & Ruben Loftus-Cheek; wingers Christian Pulisic & Hakim Ziyech; and striker Kai Havertz.

But one of their players has remained; Raheem Sterling; and he has made a sensational start to the new season; following up his Man-Of-The Match affair in a losing effort against West Ham with another sensational effort against The Hatters. First he did a sensational solo run for the opening goal; his turn of speed too hot to handle for the Luton defenders; then he turned in a brilliant cross from right-back Mala Gusto; before setting up strike partner Nicolas Jackson for his first Chelsea goal.

Hats off also to Enzo Fernandez; who was one of their bright lights in last season's shambolic affairs; who has been brilliant this season; his never-ending energy taking him to every corner of the pitch. Chelsea's trim squad is now bursting with energy and youth; and it bodes well for the coming season.
