In a rather attritional first half; it was pretty even until Everton gained a penalty just before half-time when Kurt Zouma rather innocuously handled a cross from Ben Godfrey. Unfortunately for the home side; Beto's effort was brilliantly saved by Alphonse Areola; who was in top form all afternoon; denying the Toffees on several occasions.
Beto redeemed himself though in the 56th minute; when he headed home a brilliant cross from James Garner to give Everton the lead. Unfortunately though; it didn't last long enough; as Zouma turned from zero to hero; flicking home an astute header from dead-ball specialist James Ward-Prowse's corner.
In contrast to the first half; the second was a more open affair; with both sides having decent chances; but it was arguably Everton who looked the more likely; with Dominic Calvert-Lewin & Andre Gomes coming on for Beto & Jack Harrison respectively.
Out of the blue though; Mohammed Kudus; who was lively all afternoon; crossed from the left; and Soucek; who had an outstanding game and was moved up to attacking midfield to accommodate Kalvin Phillips; produced a magnificent swerving shot into the side netting to win the game for the Hammers. From another breakaway from an Everton corner; it was Jarrod Bowen who released Edson Alvarez to seal the game for the Hammers.
