One Night Stand

It's documentary season on Netflix; and you'd be hard-pressed to find a better one than The Greatest Night In Pop; the feature on the seminal 1985 recording of 'We Are The World'; started by legends Lionel Richie & Michael Jackson. Everywhere you turned there was a superstar; from Diana Ross to Bette Midler to Daryl Hall & John Oates.

In true home video style; you get to see the unearthing of this memorable night; when miraculously all the biggest stars in music came together for one epic song. You see interesting anecdotes of how Cyndi Lauper was selected ahead of Madonna; how Sheila E. was kept there just to try to draw Prince in (who never came after being denied a guitar solo); and how Jackson worked harder than everyone by turning up early instead of attending the Grammy Awards. Another thing that shone through was despite being the biggest star; how friendly & humble Jackson is.

There are interesting soundbites too; like how Huey Lewis was elevated to bridge status after Prince failed to show up; how certain stars were worried they couldn't hit the high notes; and even Al Jarreau; who got drunk too early and nearly screwed up the whole thing (needing Richie to intervene before other stars got mad).

Not everything went perfect though; like everyone wanting their own say and delaying the whole project; to country star Waylon Jennings leaving the set after refusing to sing in Swahili; and Stevie Wonder more or less acting like a bigshot lol. All in all; it was a great night that will probably never be repeated.
