The rules have also been tweaked; with more foreigners allowed to play and less locals required; thus upping the standard of the league. What also makes this season interesting is that Albirex Niigata; so dominant in the past few seasons; have become a local club; meaning they are unable to call on an entirely Japanese team. Brunei DPMM are also back; looking as strong as they were when they last won the title.
On the local front; it means the Lion City Sailors may finally fulfil their destiny to win the title. They will face tough competition though from Tampines Rovers who are determined to restore past glories; and even Hougang United; who have bought wisely and surprised all last season with several enterprising displays. Even the Young Lions now look better equipped with the change in format. All in all; it promises to be the most wide open race in years.
