On hindsight though; perhaps he just had to go. Their title defence has been nothing short of shambolic. After a few lucky last-minute victories early in the season; they only papered over the cracks; as a stunning run of losses saw them out of the title frame pretty early on.
His signings have also been a big part of it. After having spent a British record £450 million in the transfer market; they were supposed to get better. Instead they got worse. Alexander Isak; the protracted £125 million signing was a huge disappointment; struggling with form & fitness; and basically looking a shadow of his former self at Newcastle United. Even worse was Florian Wirtz; perhaps the best player in Germany; that could not handle the transition to the Premiership and spent most of the season looking bamboozled.
Another problem was the team harmony. Mohamed Salah; so long a legend at the club; was reduced to 'interview chaos' as he couldn't get along with Slot and was amazingly benched for some high-profile matches. In the end; his impending departure proved a real bugbear for the club; with him either starting or not starting also proving a problematic scenario.
So I guess there was no other option. Andoni Iraola is the man most likely to get the job; and he has done an impressive job taking Bournemouth to 6th in the league and one of the most eye-watering sides. The question though will remain: if he can bring his success to Liverpool; or have it all erased in the blink of an eye.
